Royal Mail is the backbone of the UK’s postal service, handling billions of letters and parcels every year. With such high volumes, occasional tracking delays, missed deliveries, or confusion around collection procedures are inevitable.
If you are facing difficulties while tracking a Royal Mail parcel or navigating a missed delivery, this guide provides practical solutions for the most common postal issues, along with direct customer service contact details.
📦 Missing a Royal Mail Delivery
What happens if I am not home for a delivery?
Royal Mail has implemented an automatic redelivery system for your convenience. If you are not home and your parcel won't fit through the letterbox or requires a signature, the postie will automatically attempt to redeliver the item on the next working day. If that fails, they will leave a red "Something for you" card. The card will explain if the item was left in a SafePlace, with a neighbor, or if it has been taken back to the local Customer Service Point.
What do I do with the "Something for you" card?
The red card is your key to retrieving your package. You have three main options:
Wait or Rebook: Wait for the automatic next-day redelivery, or arrange a free redelivery to your home or a local Post Office® online. Remember, 48 working hours' notice is required to schedule a specific redelivery.
Collect in Person: If you want your item immediately, you can pick it up in person from your local delivery office. The exact address where your parcel is being held will be printed on the card.
What ID is required to collect a package?
To keep your mail secure, Royal Mail requires proof of identification when collecting from a delivery office or Post Office. You must bring the "Something for you" card (or the SMS/email notification) along with one of the following in the name of the person addressed on the parcel:
- Credit/debit card or bank statement.
- Valid passport or driving license.
- Photo identity card (e.g., military, NHS, or senior citizen bus pass). Note: A photocard driving license is accepted as both photo ID and proof of address. Only original, recent documents are accepted.
How long will Royal Mail hold my missed parcel?
Royal Mail will hold your item at the delivery office or Post Office for 18 days. If it is not redelivered or collected within that 18-day retention period, it will be returned to the sender.
Resolving Tracking & Routing Issues
What if I lost my "Something for you" card?
If you missed a delivery and lost the physical red card, do not panic. You cannot collect the item in person without the card, but you can still go online and arrange a redelivery to your home or an alternative local address using your tracking number.
Can I collect a package on behalf of someone else?
Yes. To collect an item for someone else (including a child), you need to bring the "Something for you" card and an accepted form of ID in the recipient's name. If you do not have their ID, you must bring the card, your own photo ID, and official proof (like a utility bill or bank statement) that you live at the specific address the card was delivered to.
Are there exceptions for redelivering valuable items?
Yes. For security reasons, Royal Mail will not redeliver "Special Delivery Guaranteed" items or international items that require a signature to a different alternative address. These must be delivered to the original address or collected in person.
